Another Day, Another Fight

Well, now that we’ve all had our time to wallow in our worries, fears, and defeats; it’s time to dust ourselves off and move forward.
There are plenty more battles to be fought.
Monday, January 11th, federal courts will hear the cases of two couples whom attempted to marry in California, but were denied the right to do so. Citing that such a denial was unconstitutional, both couples have filed lawsuits in an effort to fight for their right to marry.
In a historic decision, San Francisco federal judge Vaughn Walker, has decided to allow cameras into the courtroom with permission to broadcast the case. Live streaming will not be allowed, however daily updates will be posted to YouTube.
Marriage equality opponents have been making quite a stink in Iowa with regard to their recently passed marriage law. One minute, they’re threatening to attempt to overturn it, and the next minute they’re saying, “nevermind.” Either way, we must be prepared for the possibility of a fight for marriage equality right here in our own backyard.
There are still more things to do, laws to be passed, rallies to be organized, LGBT youth to be protected, and LGBT seniors that need advocating for, etc.
In spite of our frustration and the deliverance of such a saddening blow so early in the year, we must also remember our victories. New Hampshire residents greeted their new year with signed marriage licenses, and Rhode Island residents can now enjoy the right to plan their partners’ funeral arrangements in spite of obvious inequalities pertaining to the recognition of their relationship.
