CALL TO ACTION: Safe Schools Improvement Act
LGBT, NewsBites, Society & Culture — By Speak Equal on April 16, 2010 at 2:07 pmDear Adults and Parents,
Today is National Day of Silence. On this day, our youth have pledged to be silent at school in an effort to protest bullying, harassment, and inequality in our schools.
It is our responsibility to support our youth, and speak up on behalf of our community; and on this day, we can do just that. For us, this day needs to be a day of speaking out, and speaking out LOUDLY!
This year’s National Day of Silence is in dedicated memory of Carl Joseph Walker.
Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover took his life on April 6, 2009, after enduring constant bullying at school, including being called “gay” and a “faggot” despite the fact he did not identify as gay.
His mother, Sirdeaner Walker, and GLSEN have launched a petition and call to action in support of the Safe Schools Improvement Act, a federal anti-bullying bill with 101 bipartisan cosponsors.
The petition can be found HERE: PETITION
Please take a few seconds to sign it, and also a few minutes to call our representatives and tell them how important the passage of this measure is to our Michigan-based schools.
An action alert encouraging those concerned about bullying to spend five minutes in memory of Carl and call their Representative can be found at HERE: CALL TO ACTION.
Standing in solidarity,
Brooke N. Murphy
