Gay Marriage Appeals Grinding Into Gear in California

As many of you may have already figured out, we hear at Speak Equal took a bit of a blogging recess this past summer.

Nothing horribly and dramatic happened, merely several of our teammates and moving parts had a summer chock full of classes, work, training, and travel.

With that being said, it’s good to be back, and boy do we have a lot to say!

So, it seems in our absence that the gay marriage fight in California has not slowed down one bit! Good for them, good for us! Often times, a prolonged battle is lost not because of resources, but because of lack of public will and determination over time.

Recently, U.S. appeals court ruled that same-sex couples could not marry in California while the court considers the constitutionality of the state’s ban on gay marriage. This is a frustrating reversal to U.S. District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker’s earlier ruling that gay marriages could resume while higher courts considered the matter.

California’s ban on same-sex marriage, known as Proposition 8, passed in November 2008, setting off emotional reactions among both opponents and supporters of the ban.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker ruled earlier this month that the ban was unconstitutional.

So, it seems the sad reality in this country remains: two complete strangers can get married in this country and reap all the benefits and protections before two loving, caring adults can … where’s the sanctity in that?
