Merely two months after two men were caught on tape beating a gay man nearly to death, and a week after the New York State Senate rejected a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, Tarlach MacNiallais, a prominent gay activist was tackled and beaten by bouncers at a Queens nightclub.
According to police reports, the attack followed a confrontation between MacNiallais and bouncers at the Guadalajara De Noche restaurant in Jackson Heights.
MacNiallais was apparently dancing with another man when club bouncers approached him and said, “You can’t do that here, this is not a gay bar.”
MacNiallais reportedly responded saying, “I have just as much right as anyone else.”
The bouncers then proceeded to tackle him to the ground, drag him away from the other dancers before punching and kicking him, and even breaking a chair over his body.
MacNiallais — spokesman for the Irish Lesbian and Gay Organization, is best known for its annual fight to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The NYPD has confirmed that this attack is being investigated as a possible hate crime.
