Minnesota fights for marriage equality, Christian groups promise a brawl

The Minnesota Family Council is attempting to intervene in opposition to a lawsuit seeking legal gay marriage in Minnesota.

The group is represented by Alliance Defense Fund attorney Jordan Lorence, who frequently represents conservative Christian groups around the country in gay rights cases. He’s filing the request Thursday.

Lorence says the Family Council wants to be able to mount its argument that the Minnesota Constitution does not leave room for legal same-sex marriage.

The lawsuit filed last month in Hennepin County by three same-sex couples seeks to overturn Minnesota’s 1997 law reserving marriage for heterosexual couples. The Family Council was one of the main lobbying forces behind that law.
