Nebraska activists call for marriage equality in their state
LGBT, NewsBites — By Speak Equal on April 5, 2010 at 2:37 pmOMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Supporters of gay marriage have called for Nebraska to join the few states that have legalized the unions.
A rally was held Saturday at the midpoint of a pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River linking Iowa and Nebraska. Participants celebrated last April’s Iowa Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in that state and called for Nebraska to follow suit.
Susie Brenner and Linda Beckstead of Omaha were among 101 gay couples married in Iowa last year. Brenner says it’s time for Nebraska to recognize their marriage and give them the same benefits of other married couples.
