Sen. Ashburn wins at losing, receives “Pink Brick Award”
LGBT, NewsBites — By Speak Equal on April 24, 2010 at 3:20 pmCalifornia State Sen. Roy Ashburn has become the first gay recipient of the “Pink Brick Award.” The award, given by the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Committee, highlights a person (or organization) who has done the most to anger and/or disappoint the gay community.
Earlier this year, Sen. Ashburn was arrested for drunk driving following a night at a local gay bar. This arrest led to harsh criticism and speculation regarding the Senator’s sexual orientation. Following years of rejecting nearly every pro-gay/pro-equal rights piece of legislation possible, Sen. Ashburn came out as a gay man — causing an outpouring of opinions ranging from anger to pity.
This year, Sen. Ashburn joins a long (and growing) list of not-so-proud award winners, including Dianne Feinstein, Carrie Prejean, Bill O’Reilly, and even the Human Rights Campaign.
