Video: State Rep. Launches Proclamation of Morality

In everyone’s haste to harken back to our so-called founding fathers’ original intentions and religious convictions, it seems everyone keeps forgetting one of their most passionate beliefs: separation of church & state.
During the 18th century, when our country was first sowing the seeds of liberty and our great Constitution was being penned, one of the first things that fell from their lips was the desire for a land that legitimized people’s rights to pursue happiness. Not that long ago for many of them, they’d fled a land where they were being persecuted for their religious beliefs, discriminated against based upon their “place” in society, and where people were being denied their basic human rights as governments abused their power and subsequently abused their citizens.
If you ask me (and you didn’t, but I’ll tell you anyway), the level of hypocrisy involved with this country’s formation was unspeakable. Personally, I can’t understand why we would look to people who spoke in one manner, but acted in a completely different fashion. Several of our founding fathers held absolutely horrid attitudes toward women, and we won’t even begin to point fingers at who owned slaves. As they were proclaiming liberty, they were using “divine right” to declare their “natural place” above Native Americans, Africans, and certain other immigrants. Rape, theft, and violence were natural and accepted methods of “dealing with the savages.”
Today’s equal rights movements, which are dedicated to pushing for true equality and true equal protection under the law for all human beings shouldn’t be viewed as a challenge. Instead, it should be viewed as an opportunity to do what we should have been doing all along: providing all citizens of this country with equal human rights.
