Same-sex marriage opponents have announced their next move — and it’s right in our backyard.

The Iowa Family Council, whose “mission is to restore and defend traditional moral principles in the culture by advocating for sound public policy,” has announced that it will organize a rally at the State Capitol on Jan. 12.

The date marks the first time all three branches of the government are expected to be together since the Iowa Supreme Court’s unanimous April 3, 2009 ruling that cleared the way for same-sex unions in the state. In addition, Gov. Chet Culver is set to deliver his Condition of the State address.

Unlike California, a constitutional amendment needs the approval of the General Assembly in Iowa before being put on the ballot.
